Six sightseers were injured in a terrifying lift plunge at Tower Bridge today.

Three were taken to hospital after the lift plummeted 140ft, from ‘the top to the bottom’ of the bridge’s north tower at around 1pm, police said.

The nine passengers were then trapped for around an hour in the world famous landmark before fire crews cut through the doors to free them.

Those hurt included a husband and wife who suffered leg injuries. One person was taken from the scene on a stretcher.

The bridge, which is managed by the City of London Corporation, was closed for several hours.

Tourists can visit walkways on the bridge – which was completed in 1894 – 140ft above the Thames.
