With the recent launch of 118 800 – the UK’s first mobile phone telephone directory enquiry service – there are numerous emails circulating with false information on how to go about removing your number from the directory.

If your mobile number is one of the 16 million the 118 800 directory have in their database and you’d like it removed or you are concerned about the privacy of your family, such as children and teenagers, then following these simple steps will ensure you are listed as ex-directory, meaning your number will not be listed or shared.

1 – Go to the page listed below. It will open in a new window allowing you to follow these steps as you complete the form.

http://www.118800.co.uk/

2 – At the top of the page, just in the middle, you will need to click Ex-directory (it’s to the right of Tell A Friend)

3 – On the remove page scroll down and you’ll see a small form.

4 – Enter the mobile number you want ex-directory plus the verification code (that’s just to check you are human)

5 – Hit submit. At this point you are taken to a page asking you to enter a five digit code that you’ll receive almost immediately via text message.

6 – Enter the five digit code and press submit.

That’s it.

If you still are concerned about your child’s mobile number being listed you can also call customer services on 0800 138 6263 or alternatively text the letter E to 118 800 from your child’s mobile.

118 800 do claim that they have a policy not to list under 18’s mobile numbers.

One final step you can take to prevent your details being acquired by third parties is to make certain you read the small check boxes you are often asked to tick when filling in your details on forms – both on and offline.

They ask do you wish your information to be shared by ‘trusted’ third parties. This is a way for your details to be legally sold on and how companies such as 118 800 obtain your personal details.
