2010 British Motor Show Cancelled

Next year’s British Motor Show has been cancelled because of the crisis in the car industry.

It is the first time the iconic show has been cancelled – apart from during the two World Wars – since it began more than 100 years ago.

Organisers blamed the economic downturn and the ‘unprecedented challenge’ facing the UK’s beleaguered motor industry.

But the slump in sales, lay-offs, short-time working and factory shut-downs means the show, which takes place every two years, will not go ahead in 2010.

Next year’s show was planned for London’s Excel centre, where it last year attracted more than 472,000 visitors, but a number of manufacturers had already indicated they would not be attending.

A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said:’Following a thorough consultation with the UK motor industry, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has taken the difficult decision to cancel the 2010 British International Motor Show.’

The biggest ever attendance was in 1978 at Birmingham’s NEC when a record 908,194 people viewed the cars on show.
