The New York Yankees

The New York Yankees scored three runs at the top of the ninth innings to clinch a 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies that puts them just one win away from a 27th World Series title.

A thrilling fourth game turned decisively in the Yankees’ favour when Alex Rodriguez drove deep one bounce off the left field wall to score Johnny Damon for the go-ahead run at 5-4.

The game was up for the defending champions soon after when Jorge Posada fired reliever Brad Lidge into centre field to bring Teixeira and Rodriguez over home plate to give the Yankees breathing space.

Closer Mariano Rivera then produced an eight-pitch innings to end the contest and put New York on the verge of their first World Series crown since 2000.

Defeat was hard on the Phillies who had battled bravely to tie up the match at 4-4 having been 2-0 and 4-2 behind.
