Tiger Woods sidestepped the controversial issue of his appearance fee to play at the Australian Masters in November.

The American is reportedly being paid $3 million (£2.06m) to turn up at the Melbourne tournament, with Victoria’s taxpayers covering half of that via the state goverment’s support for the event.

That has not gone down well in the current economic climate and with Victoria still reeling from the recent bush fires, while five-time Open champion Peter Thomson believes it will also damage the Australian Open held in early December.

“This is the only place that doesn’t have appearance fees,” Woods said on Wednesday ahead of the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.

“Most of the guys get appearance fees to play around the world. I’ve played all around the world and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed going.
