Cristiano Ronaldo’s sixth-minute 40-yard strike sent Manchester United through to an all-English Champions League semi-final with Arsenal as they beat Porto 1-0 to win 3-2 on aggregate.

The return of Rio Ferdinand was the crucial factor in taking Manchester United into the Champions League semi-finals, manager Alex Ferguson said on Wednesday.

Ferguson said the other big difference from the first leg at Old Trafford was that holders United had four days rest before the second leg, two more than last week.

Now the United manager must prepare for a first leg against Arsene Wenger’s team at Old Trafford on April 29 and the Scot has challenged his players to take a lead to the Emirates for the return leg.

He said: “No matter what happens, the semi-final is going to be a big factor in our season now. With it being an all-English tie, it will certainly give it extra spice.
