UCL Round-Up: Liverpool and Rangers Blow It

Published by djmick on November 5th, 2009

My stress levels were unbelievable as I watched Inter miss chance after chance in Kiev. Thankfully two late goals eased the tension but they put me through 86 minutes of hell before scoring. Not good for the old ticker that carry on. ;-)

Here’s a quick round up of all the action from the eight games played last night.

Group E

Fiorentina 5 – Debrecen 2

Mutu

Fiorentina remain on course to dump Liverpool out of the Champions League after their third successive win saw them dispatch Debrecen in a seven-goal thriller at the Artemio Franchi.

Lyon 1 – Liverpool 1

Lisandro

Lisandro Lopez’s dramatic late goal left Liverpool on the brink of elimination after a 1-1 draw in France.

Ryan Babel’s stunning goal seven minutes from time looked like giving Liverpool a precious win until Lisandro struck in the final minute to break Liverpool’s hearts.

Group F

Rubin Kazan 0 – Barcelona 0

Messi

Barcelona came up short in sub-zero temperatures as they played out a 0-0 draw with surprise package Rubin Kazan.

The Spanish giants dominated possession for most of game but failed to break the deadlock as Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck their best chance against the post.

Dynamo Kiev 1 – Inter Milan 2

Balotelli

In the space of three minutes Inter went from the bottom of Group F to the top as they came from behind to beat Kiev in the Ukraine.

Andriy Shevchenco had given the hosts the lead in the first-half before late goals from Diego Milito and Wesley Sneijder won it for the Italians.

Group G

Sevilla 1 – Stuttgart 1

Navas

Sevilla booked their place in the knockout phase despite only drawing 1-1 with Stuttgart at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

The Spaniards have dominated Group G and because of the draw between Unirea and Rangers, in the end a point sufficed for Manolo Jimenez’s side.

Unirea Urziceni 1 – Rangers 1

McCulloch

A Marius Onofras goal two minutes from time denied Rangers a vital victory over Unirea Urziceni in Bucharest.

Gers keeper Allan McGregor had kept his side in the game with two fantastic saves to deny Vasile Maftei and a deflection off Danny Wilson in the first period.

Lee McCulloch then gave Walter Smith’s side the lead with 11 minutes to go with a powerful effort from outside the box.

But Onofras broke Gers’ hearts with two minutes to go with a fantastic strike into the top right corner which gave McGregor no chance.

Group H

Arsenal 4 – AZ Alkmaar 1

Nasri

Arsenal recorded a comfortable victory over AZ Alkmaar at Emirates Stadium to move them within touching distance of the knockout stages.

Cesc Fabregas netted a brace while Samir Nasri and Abou Diaby also got their names on the scoresheet as the Gunners made amends for a sloppy draw versus the Eredivisie champions a fortnight ago.

Standard Liege 2 – Olympiakos 0

Mbokani

Standard Liege retained their slim hopes of qualifying from Group H after a convincing 2-0 victory over Olympiakos.

The Greek side went into the match hoping secure a passage into the last 16 but were outfought in a hostile environment at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne.
