In 1995 Japan was hit by a huge earthquake. Worst hit was the port of Kobe, a city of 1.5 million. Whole buildings and apartment blocks collapsed killing at least 200 people and injuring some 13,000.

This set of pictures show the damaged caused to an elevated stretch of motorway.

You may have seen these images doing the round claiming to be an “Engineering Failure In Korea” – sadly not the case.
