Abandoned Anna & The King Movie Set

The 1999 movie “Anna & The King” starring Jodie Foster, Yun-Fat Chow and Bai Ling was filmed in part on the beautiful island of Langkawi off the west coast of Malaysia.

For filming the producers built a Summer Palace in Pantai Kok in the mould of the olden day palaces of Thailand. It took about 100 local and foreign workers six weeks for the palace by the beach to be built.
It occupies an area of 675 square metres and comprises four sections, namely Jetty Pavillion, Main Building, Courtyard and Anna’s House.

After the filming ended, 20th Century Fox handed over the building to Langkawi Development Authority which reconstructed it to make it more durable.

The “palace” housed the props and costumes used in the movie and was opened to the public in April 2000 with a Thai restaurant and souvenir shop on its grounds plus traditional Thai performances held throughout the day as well as showings of the movie “Anna & The King”.

Sometime around late 2003 the Palace was closed as a tourist attraction and soon after some of the smaller buildings were used by the Telaga Beach Club.

My guess is the Telaga Beach Club went out of business after the tsunami in December 2004 as the Telaga Marina, which is located just to the left of the movie set, was totally destroyed.
Now all the buildings sit in ruin surrounded by barbed wire and ‘Do Not Enter’ notices.
