Photo Special: War On The Streets Of Rio

Brazil’s president has offered Rio de Janeiro $58.3 million, and the assistance of the federal police force, to help tackle gang violence, which killed 17 in incidents over the weekend.
Three police officers, 12 suspected drug traffickers and two civilians were killed in the weekend’s violence, which saw drug gangs battle the police and each other. A police helicopter was shot down over the “Hill of Monkeys”, and at least eight buses were set on fire.
The violence raised safety concerns for 2016 Olympics, which Rio was elected to host just over two weeks ago.
